Introduction
In September 2003, in response to the growing interest in wireless technology for use in teaching and learning at Ohio State, Chief Information Officer Ilee Rhimes formed a committee on Wireless Instructional Strategies. The purpose of the committee was to bring a representative group of faculty, students and support staff together to contribute to the definition and deployment of wireless technology in the classroom and throughout the campus, and to help ensure that the university explores innovative approaches to supporting teaching and learning.
In March 2004, the Committee published its final report which included seven recommendations. One of those recommendations was that Ohio State should build and support a single wireless network for campus.
During the remainder of 2004, a proposal to fund the building and maintenance of a wireless network infrastructure for Ohio State Columbus campus was presented to university leadership, including the Coordinating Council, Council of Deans, Senior Fiscal Officers and University Senate Fiscal Committee. In January 2005, these leaders gave their approval to move forward with the project.
The Wireless Project for Ohio State University Columbus campus officially began January 2005. This web site was created to provide timely information to the university community concerning the project status and related-details.
