Project Status

May/June 2005: Phase I Roll Out Planned For September 2005

Phase I of the wireless network project for The OSU Columbus campus will roll out by the start of fall quarter classes in September 2005. This first phase will include the conversion of more than 190 existing access points (currently utilized for OSUWeb.net) to create wireless hotspots in over 60 buildings across campus. A limited number of primary student gathering areas will also be converted to wireless hotspots during this phase. Additional information concerning wireless hotspot locations, how to connect and more will be posted to the "Connect!" section of this web site in the coming months.

 

April 2005: Project Governance Committees Formed; Site Visits Planned

Project governance structure committees are scheduled to hold their kick off meetings during May 2005.

Project Directors Bob Corbin and Chuck Morrow-Jones, Pedagogy representative Joanne Dehoney and Project Manager Tracey Richardson are scheduled to perform site visits to meet with key representatives from colleges, select support units and student governments. The site visits will begin May 2005.

 

March 2005: Proposed Project Governance Structure Unveiled

At the March 10th Wireless Summit, a proposed governance structure for the OSU Wireless Network Project was unveiled to attendees. The project goverenance structure attempts to balance the community’s desire for participation and need for reassurance of interoperability and accountability, with the project’s need for input regarding customer requirements, wireless technology experiences, endorsement and means of arbitration. Representatives for the committees are expected to be identified by the end of April 2005.

 

January & February 2005: Wireless Infrastructure Proposal Approved by University Leaders

A proposal to build a campus-wide wireless network infrastructure for The Ohio State University Columbus campus we presented to University leaders, including: Coordinating Council, Council of Deans, Senior Fiscal Officers and the University Senate Fiscal Committee. These leaders gave their vote of confidence by approving the proposal and committing funding to build and expand the campus-wide wireless network over 5 years.
